review 1: Do you like people getting non consensual brain surgery? Then this might be the book for you! That's not a euphemism, there are two potentially explosive devices shoved into unwitting character's craniums in this book. One has blades that pop out of it for dramatic effect! Edgy! A whole group of specially trained evil soldiers have their skins systematically removed while awake for reasons that are never explained. My guess is to make them seem like assholes so the good guys can kill them without remorse. Just my own thoughts. Other groups have implants put into their bodies that are supposed to help them control machines but story wise honestly don't seem to do anything at all other than make them horribly vulnerable to germs and impact wounds. The writing is brisk and e... moreasy and has a sense of breezy fun to it. Other then all the casual murder, torture and rape it would be a nice beach read. The plot loses steam somewhere along the first two or three chapters and spends the rest of it's time making it's ladies act psychotic and helpless. Often both at once. Then the guys can come save the day. Will be passing on the sequels.
review 2: I received a free copy of this book through a Good reads giveaway. As much as I shudder to compare a book to a bag of potato chips, I'm going to steal the tagline from Lays, "You can't eat just one." Of course change "eat" to "read" and (most importantly) realize I mean read the pages, not eat them. Sara King nails what I've been trying to say for years in a much more concise fashion in the author's note, "...There are two kinds of science-fiction... Character-driven fiction is that delicious mental ambrosia where, regardless of genre, the story revolves around the characters and their problems, wants and general screw-ups, delving into the emotion of a situation, not the setting... Hard science fiction, a.k.a. techno babble, is the dry stuff that reminds you of college physics textbooks explaining cool new ideas in a very logical way. I mean, it's neat, but you can forget the main character's name in a couple days." Fortune's Rising definitely earns the title of character driven science fiction. You'd be hard pressed to find more engaging characters. The worst thing I can say about this book is that it ended too soon. How often will someone ever say that about a book that is 561 pages long? Still a quick search to find and order the second book lead me to see that many fans are of the same opinion. (And the second book has not yet been released so if you are the impatient sort, know that you might have a bit of a wait ahead of you. less
