review 1: Overall it was an ok book. I got very frustrated with the plot. Engaged to one man, Amelia proposes to another. Her motives are both selfish and pure. Edward, the first betrothed is predictably everything you'd expect from an unctuous malicious sponge of a man. Captain Sterling, the second betrothed is the quintessential good but wounded man. Amelia is too stupid to readily see the true nature of either. She's single minded in her desire to keep Lucy, captain Sterling's baby girl. In the end, after much prayer, stupidity, and some action, the good man gets the girl, the money, the estate, and the instant family. Things that bothered me: I think that this book could be classified as "Christian romance" which means it annoyed me. Right from the beginning it had thi... mores whiney preachy tone. The characters constantly questioned themselves, their faith, and God. Me? I am more the don't whine to or about God, just live your best life and be thankful for what you have. This whiney preach tone grates like nails on a blackboard. The another annoying thing was that Amelia's vulnerability could have been resolved by marriage. They knew it, but let stuff get in the way. Oh you have a child kidnapped and need to go on the road? Take that special license you have for the wedding and get ye to the preacher, since he's your best friend's husband. Two witnesses were available any time. Instead they take the preacher's wife in travel. That's just too much to buy. Marry the girl for crying out loud. And everyone is so patronizing about a woman's place. Blergh. I would have thrown the book if it wasn't my iPad. Lastly, despite trying for the red herring of brother William as villain, it wasn't convincing, and we all knew it was Edward. I mean the author 's agenda about family and redemption would not have allowed for William the drunken sot and spendthrift to be the real villain. I would only recommend this book to people who want whiney, preachy, predictable, and bland. I expect more from my historical fiction.
review 2: 3.9Fun read. Definitely recommend it to anyone. I love the Captain Wentworth-style hero. The faith journeys (which fundamentally I approve of) came across a little cheesy, but it was fine. I would love to see more and more from this author.I felt like there were a few holes in the plot. Such as, wouldn't Helena have been happy that Amelia dumped Edward? And wasn't her Uncle pretty evil during the blow-up? I guess she was trying to do a red herring, but it makes me skeptical that he ended up blameless. The red herring with William was okay. I loved the happy ending, though! less

I loved the first half of this book, but got bored as soon as the kidnapping began.
