review 1: This was not a mystery. The reader knows from the beginning who "the bad guy" is, and we're forced to spend many tedious hours following him around as he creepily does creepy things. When we're not being subjected to that, we're spending time with Jacobia who does so many jaw-droppingly stupid things that we'd be appalled if we weren't already gobsmacked by the even stupider actions of everyone surrounding her.
review 2: I don’t know what’s happened to this series. I used to really like it, but I’ve had a hard time getting into the last few stories. Graves’s shift from first to third person POV has distanced me from Jake Tiptree. I don’t feel as if I’m in her head, seeing what she sees, experiencing what she’s experiencing. I feel more like ... moreI’m watching events from outside her.Could it be that Graves is getting tired of Jake and only continuing the series out of inertia?Jake’s past coming back to put her in danger could have been a really great story but Graves didn’t quite pull it off. The story runs too long by about a hundred pages, for one thing, and there’s too little buildup of tension before things really start happening. Putting so much of the book in the bad guy’s POV diluted it, too. Jake dealing with attacks from an anonymous source would have made for a much more nail-biting read.Offsetting that however, Graves has written one of the creepiest bad guys I’ve ever read about.There also was a glaring continuity error: An engine stalls then races then driver starts the engine.I hope Graves soon gets back to the engaging quality of earlier books in series. But I’m not holding much hope. less
