review 1: I think I have found a new mystery writer to enjoy! I'm going to have to go back and try to start from her first novel in the series. Even so, coming in at #16, Ms. Graves did a good job of working in enough of the main character's backgrounds for you to understand why they acted as they did. It definitely makes me want to know more about them from the beginning. The mystery in this book is a lively, enjoyable read.
review 2: I used to collect Sarah Graves home repair mysteries. After a time, the formula of there always being murders in a small Maine town seemed a bit unbelievable. So when I lost my home to foreclosure and had to to do radical culling of my 6,000+ books, these were sold to a used books store. I seldom buy books as the county in which I l
... moreive has twenty-seven library branches so I can get almost every book that I want to read. On a recent visit to library branch nearest my home to pick up books I had requested online, I saw Sarah Graves' newest Home repair mystery and decided to give it a try. I found this book interesting and the formula much improved. I can often figure out who the murderer is halfway through a mystery, but this story kept me guessing to the very end. I used to live in Virginia where some strong northeasters can occur. So I found that seeing Jacobia Tiptree and her friend Ellie go out and about to investigate a murder during such a storm very stupid. It is like idiots along the Gulf Coast area where I grew up having hurricane parties instead of evacuating. Now it was different when Jacobia and Ellie went looking for Sam because what mother or father wouldn't go looking for a missing child even one who is an adult? Otherwise, this book captured and held my attention to the point where I only put it down when I had to run errands or feed my cats. I also love the title and in fact find all the titles for the Home Repair Mysteries clever. Since I enjoyed A Bat in the Belfry I may go to my library's web site and request other titles that I've missed in this series. In closing this review, I have a phrase to share that is on a sticker I got in a collection of envelope stickers. It reads, "Re-elect Senator Batson D. Belfry"! It seems appropriate given the title of Sarah Graves' newest book. less
