review 1: I hate giving this book 3 stars, it was more of 3 1/2 stars. I love Sarah Waters, she crafts a great tale and takes her time, which added to the weird, other-worldly quality of the novel. However, it seemed to get bogged down once Roderick left and never fully recovered. It fizzled out at the end, I just wanted it to be over. Her other books have been outstanding, so it was hard to give this one a weaker rating.
review 2: Initially, I was disappointed with the ending to this novel. Very slow and written in a Gothic tone, it is set after WWII in England. Times are changing, which is reflected in this novel with the changing social classes. The narrator is Dr. Faraday, who came from lower status but put himself through medical school. He becomes obsessed with
... more the Ayres family, who own a large, crumbling mansion that he has always admired. He becomes entangled with their affairs, and the story eventually moves into a bit of a ghost story, which is where my dissatisfaction with the ending came into play. However, upon thinking about it (and reading some Internet reviews), I decided I was okay with the story. less
