review 1: A very good psychological thriller with an excellent setting. The Paying Guests takes place in London after World War I. Waters paints the picture vividly, from her genteel main characters who have to take in lodgers now that they're no longer wealthy, to the WWI soldiers unable to find work or solace, to the restrictive social mores that prevent our main character from having any kind of life as long as she's unwilling to marry. In addition to the great backdrop, the novel is fast-paced, well-plotted, and emotionally complex.
review 2: A huge surprise in a good way, the book reveals what life was like for an English woman in the 1920s. It turns in to a sort of mystery where only the reader and the main character know who did it. I liked the insight into the ti... moreme period, plus the juxtaposition between family obligations and living "honestly," which no lesbians could do safely and openly in the 20s (or well after). Lots of things going on here, but Waters juggles those things very well. less
