review 1: I just discovered Sarah Waters after being enthralled by "The Paying Guests". I opted to try "The Little Stranger" based on the reviews and the fact that it was a haunted house story made it sound even better. I'm afraid that I was disappointed with this one. Waters is long-winded and very detailed and this book did not flow or keep me turning the pages like I did with "The Paying Guests". It is wonderfully atmospheric and rich in historical details but, at 450 pages, it is just too much for a novel with basically a simple plot line. That said, I do look forward to her other books.

... morehere was finally a scene that got my blood going in a novel with a 'haunted house' at its center. Even then, major developments never happens to the main character. It is all told second hand. Also, I'm all for ambiguity with an ending, so long as enough is going on throughout the book to allow the reader to draw their own conclusion. Unfortunately, because so little happened in the story, the ambiguous ending felt empty. I wasn't interested enough in the story to try to draw a conclusion. Points for establishing characters and settings but disappointing, overall. less

There is a creeping sense of dread, practically from the first page. Not the usual ghost story.

i really enjoyed this novel. A beautifully written period piece. But with a real twist.
