review 1: I liked this book. It's fast paced - a thriller for sure - but maybe not my best choice for a book club book. The body count is pretty high and fairly detailed for the Reading Level and, with some understanding of the particular flavor of Hinduism that has a strong presence in this book, I know that's not a huge problem. Death isn't death per say. Reincarnation and rebirth are possible. That being said, reading this with American 5th graders that don't quite get that was a little rough. "Scary"..."too scary", seems to be the standard feel. Older readers, sure. Kids really into thrillers and not so disturbed by character death, awesome. But, probably not for everyone.I really, truly enjoyed having a lead character that was an English/Indian boy with all the identity struggl... morees that can create. Also, love the subtle construction of what a hero is and is not through out the novel.
review 2: A fun combination of adventure, magic and Hindu culture.Ash's summer vacation quickly turns into a disaster of epic proportion after his uncle got a job offer from a very powerful and rich man Mr. Savage. Things picked up really fast and rolled down hill until Ash met his destiny and came out a completely different boy.I love that there was a lot about Hindu deities but it didn't feel like info dump. I've always been fascinated by the goddess Kali and I loved that she ended up playing a significant role in the story. The only thing that didn't work for me was the death. Some people died and I couldn't make sense of it. Death in general is harsh but I have a personal thing against the type you just can't see why that had to happen. Oh well, I guess. It definitely didn't stop me from reading the book to the end, but I couldn't shake the feeling. If you like an action packed fantasy, set in a different culture (other than the typical medieval, Tolkien and whatnot) you will enjoy it. I was delighted to find that it's a trilogy? (there are only 3 books listed on goodreads) So, yay! More to read. less

Cool to see a fantasy story that isn't Eurocentric, even if it is kinda formulaic.
