review 1: It was actually a terrific light read. I liked the new supernatural that was introduced and the plot was amazing. It ended with a cliffhanger that made me want more. However, I can't give it 5/5. Why? Well, let's just see. Alex and Callum's love was so unrealistic- I was getting Twilight flashbacks. Horrible. And the way she kept raving on and on about his ridiculously good looks and just how stunning he was to the point of excessive repetition. Yes, we know he has beautiful blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes and beautifully beautiful muscles, ok now can you move on? Mary and Gary Sues everywhere.They'd known each other for a week and we already saying 'I love you'. Although I can compensate that the author was trying to move things along. However, it's breathtaking plot,... more span of likeable characters and literate writing kept me tuned in for the next book. 4/5.
review 2: Half fantasy, more mystery based novel with an original plot- "dirges" are those victims of the Thames river who don't quite cross over to the other side. When a girl in senior high finds an antique amulet in the Thames, it allows her and a handsome dirge to see & communicate with each other.This 1st book in a trilogy almost verged on paranormal but was more mystery based, with its main focus on who the dirge really was, a mushy love plot with the two characters, & his evil sister trying to break them up. It did eventually get interesting but only romantics will be able to stick with it. less
