review 1: I really liked this story. While I believe Red Church did a better job moving the plot along and its message was easier to discern, this book does a far better job of capturing both humanity and spiritual beings in terms of his descriptions of their pain, dreams and failures. The main characters in the story are very well developed and possessed strong personalities that were brought to the forefront with a corresponding background story. Admittedly, I found myself at times overwhelmed by the number of characters but, I still found myself engrossed in the atmosphere of the story and the clear image he painted with his words. While I enjoyed the buildup leading to Sylva's incantation, I found the ending to be anticlimactic and felt it extended a few pages too far. I s... moretill rated the story as a 4.
review 2: I really did enjoy this book, which took me pleasantly by surprise given it was a free Amazon download. In this book, a diverse group of creative people have gathered for a 6 week "stretching of the creative juices" in a wonderfully old gothic sort of mansion set high up in the Appalacian hills. The story goes that the house's long deceased builder had left a bequest that the mansion be used as a respite and inspiration for various kinds of creative artists. As the story opens, the people are gathering. Most of the people are rich and have had at least some level of success and notariety in their creative field. However, the lone sculptor, Mason, is a poor mill worker who is there on a grant. He is hoping to finally make his mark, at last get out of the mill, and make his poor, blind mother, who has sacrificed everything for him, proud. The lead female character, Anna, is a young paranormal researcher who has "second sight" and came in search of her own ghost. This is important to her because she is dying on colon cancer and is fairly sure she has very little time left. She has broken up with her boyfriend and grew up in foster homes and feels quite alone in the world. She really hopes to find a sense of belonging in death that she has never found in life. As one might expect, before too long, weird things begin to happen, especially centering around the large framed portraits of the mansion's builder and benefactor. It's nearly impossible to get away from the portraits because they're pretty much everywhere in the mansion. The interaction among the various characters, of course especially between Mason and Anna, are interesting and the book's climax was exciting if somewhat predictable. Every now and then I'm in the mood for a good ghost story and this filled that desire nicely. If you like ghost stories, check this book out. less
