Swamp Thing Vol. V
review 1: After having enjoyed the first volume, "Raise Them Bones", which left me excited about the rest of Scott Snyder's run on Swamp Thing, I couldn't help but feeling a little bit let down by "Family Tree". Don't get me wrong, this second volume is a great read. It collects different storylines (a lot of flashbacks) that were action-packed for the most part and well-written and drawn. Moreover, the introduction of the very powerful villain Anton Arcane to the mythos makes the story even more interesting, giving Swamp Thing a truly worthy adversary and also bringing to light the inner struggles of Abby Arcane. However, it does not measure up to the excellence of "Raise Them Bones". Plus, I expected Swamp Thing to do a little more butt-kicking but in comics, patience is key. The ... morebuild-up part was very satisfying - I expect to be dazzled by "Rotworld".
review 2: This wasn't quite as good as the first volume, but then again it might be "middle book syndrome".Swamp Thing goes more into straight action in this volume, and we get good scenes of both Swamp Thing and Abigail Arcane beating up the undead menace. Issue 0 is included here to fill in the scenes where Alec Holland first met Abby and his archenemy Anton Arcane, connecting the Rot storyline to the origin story. The arc ends with Animal Man locating Swamp Thing and both characters seeing a portal to Rotworld. I'm guessing Rotworld is a universe where the Rot won, since there's an image of a ravaged Daily Planet building. The third volume promises a Batman crossover featuring Poison Ivy. That makes perfect sense. Why wouldn't Poison Ivy be a Green agent? :)I liked Swamp Thing more when there was more tension between the humanity of the characters and the natural forces that want to use them, and there are still some moments here. Swamp Thing threatens to cut down some members of the Parliament of Trees if they call Abigail a "witch" one more time. Abigail is still fighting her destiny of joining the Rot, and does not use her powers when fighting Anton for this reason. This book is a setup for a crossover, but at least manages to work on its own. The problem with Animal Man is that he's begging for Swamp Thing's help since Volume 1, while Swamp Thing and Abby are fighting the Rot pretty well on their own. less

The Rotworld story arc was an excellent reboot for both Swamp Thing and Animal Man.

An Un-man of a TPB. Unfollowable mishmash. Poor.

Such a good, dark read.
