review 1: If asked I would've said I don't particularly need another take on the Batman origin story. However, this origin retelling was thoroughly engaging with high quality in both the writing and the art. Unlike some comics where you feel as though you're wasting your entertainment budget because it takes about 5 minutes to read, this book invites you in for a longish and well-developed visit in the world of Gotham. This had the ideal balance of dialogue and art. And all the dialogue was used in the service of character and plot development.
review 2: Collects Batman (2011) issues #21-24This story is set six years in the past of the current New 52 Universe. It chronicles Bruce Wayne's return to Gotham City, and his first attempts at being a vigilante (pre-Batman styl
... moree). This collection also shows Bruce's first mission as Batman, and shows that his first villains were the Red Hood Gang. The leader of this gang is Red Hood One, and I found him to be an awesome villain. His dialogue was great, and I really bought into him as an adversary to Batman. I'm not certain, but I wonder if this character eventually becomes the Joker. Riddler also makes his debut to the public in this collection, and as always, he is a fun villain to have around.I don't think this will be a classic in the same way that "Year One" became a classic, but it is still a great piece of work by Scott Snyder. less
