review 1: This was a fun listen. It brought me back to my college days of studying folklore and looking through the Aarne-Thompson Index at story types. In this world, the stories actually come to life and there is a government agency set up to deal with it. Quite an interesting take on the modern revisionism of folktales and recasting of well-known characters and archetypes. Several modern elements that aren't explored but simply mentioned, including one that is mentioned and then seemingly completely forgotten. Overall though it was quite an enjoyable story. I wish I could give half stars. It deserves a 3.5 but not quite a 4.
review 2: This is what I wanted the Thursday Next books to be. This is a mashup of a police procedural and fairy tales, in which some peop
... morele are archetypes of fairy tale characters while going about their normal lives. They may remain unwitting, or their stories may become "activated" and they are forced to behave in a way that retells the old tale, often in a bloody, gruesome way. Our protagonists are a group of investigators in a special Federal Agency tasked with stopping the Narrative from doing harm to the innocent citizens. I loved the humor in this and the knife edge of despair as the characters fight for their own identity outside the Narrative's influence. I loved the way that the world is explained - how the Narrative adapts and adds to its lexicon as old tales are modernized and changed over time. This book was clever and dark. There was a great ensemble cast of characters - human and activated, male and female, gay and straight - and who can resist a Scooby Gang ending? McGuire's writing can be a little clunky at times, but this had a real charm to it without ever being sweet or nostalgic. less
