review 1: An old drug seems to be finding new distribution streams and more changelings are showing up dead. When October brings this up with the Queen of the Mists, she finds that she might be the one responsible for it all. She also finds herself in exile from the court. Kind of a get out of town at sunset kind of thing. How does Toby get the Queen to change her mind while finding out how to get the drugs off the street? Before the day is over October Daye and her friends will find themselves accused of treason, while leading what might be called a revolution. All of fairie gets involved before this one is over, with changes in the court itself at stake.Seanan McGuire is one of the best at this craft, another wordsmith that I find are often my favorites when following urban fantas... morey, but dont think that because she has a way with the prose that her characters arent amazing too. October Daye stands out in the knights of fairie , there are always great plots, strong supporting casts and lots of action. Its just always told with a flow and fullness that is never rushed or confused. You want to savor these books, make them last, and then sometime in the morning after you started one, you are left waiting for the next. The world changes in this one and you dont want to miss it.
review 2: I don't like October and I rant about her a bit in here. It's still a good book, don't let my irritation with the main character take away from it for you. :-)While I enjoyed "Chimes at Midnight" it suffers from October's usual lack of thought more so than the two previous enjoyable books. She decides to visit the Queen. Yes, I know it's important but the Queen tried to have her killed once. Stupid to go visit her. Queen is selling goblin fruit and doesn't give a fig if it kills half-breeds.Get banished. Well isn't that lovely. Decide to overthow the Queen. Stupid, stupid, stupid. What should be next is "everyone October knows and loves dies/gets banished with her because SHE WAS FUCKING STUPID. October's enemies just don't play for keeps, if they did she's be neutralized by now. Oh, and Quentin? "Blind foster" What a load of SHIT. OCTOBER IS STUPID number 3. Come on. Canada. Toronto accent. Trained courtier. High King and Queen live in Toronto....sigh. Just disappointing how easy this was and how obvious.Despite all of this, still a good book. Still much better than the first three books in the series. I like all the secondary characters. October herself is dumber than a sack of hammers and an entirely "meh" heroine. But McGuire does spin a compelling yarn. Love the detail, love the text, love the setting and side characters. Still worth the read and still worthy of better than just "good" to "great" at four stars. less
