review 1: The immigrant story, set this time on the 1930s Canadian prairie, resonates with current political themes. This bleak tale of survival is nuanced by its unique portrayal of family love and ideas of justice which lie outside the law. Even the villains are complex here; and each character, irrespective of age and sex, is allowed an opportunity for redemption. I was resistant to this story, initially, because it moves so slowly. Applause to the author for choosing this almost plodding approach, however; it complements the nature of the characters' daily lives and their utter dependence upon the whims of nature. I'll be looking for more work from Ms. Mitchell.
review 2: I loved this book so much I almost gave it an unheard of 5. If I had the choice I would have giv
... moreen it 4.5. This is the story of Ukranians who fled their homeland and came to settle in Western Canada. The story is told from the perspective of various family members and therefore we see their life through different lenses. Very beautifully written in a way that demonstrates both the harshness and beauty of the prairie landscape. less
