review 1: *received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads My first impression of this book was that the tone and writing style was somewhat pretentious and did not flow realistically. As I continued reading and the plot began to develop, I overcame that off-putting aspect and began to get involved. I never cared for the main character Jordan, although Rowen did grow on me and was the one of the best aspects of the book. The story/plot was depressing and the ending left me annoyed (nothing's resolved and barely any hope for the future). The world created for the novel was decently developed and suitably dark for the plot. I doubt I would continue to read the next book in the series and I don't think I would recommend it to any of my friends.

... more5 starsI won a free copy as a first-reads giveaway.“Weather Witch” takes place in a steam punk version of Philadelphia in 1844. Magick is real and those who possess it are enslaved to provide power sources for the country’s elite. On her seventeenth birthday Jordan Astraea, a high ranking member of Philadelphia society, is declared a witch. Her life and the lives of her family and friends are forever altered.I have to agree with all the other reviewers that said that this story just didn’t make sense. It was confusing and inconsistent in so many places that I just stopped trying to make sense of things. The author should have done a better job explaining her world. I think that was one of the most confusing aspects of the novel. Here are a few examples of the many things that don’t make sense:***Spoiler Warning*** - Jordan and Rowen, her friend or boyfriend, flip flopping about their feelings for each other. This is not the typical confusion of young/first love. The story really does go back and forth between characterizing them as friends or lovers. - Jordan realizes pretty early on after she’s taken that that there is no going back to her old life, either she will be made into a weather witch or she will be murdered. Yet in every subsequent chapter she’s waiting to be found innocent and sent home! - The Maker, Bran, is in the company of witches all day long and doesn’t recognize that his own daughter is a witch. - Subplots start and then abruptly drop off. I thought the author should have wrote an ending that had some kinds of resolutions or something that didn’t make this book seem like a complete waste of time. Also, Jordan and Rowen are distinctly unlikable characters. Jordan is a shallow nitwit and Rowen is a dandy. And the Maker, who tortures people to make them reveal their power, turns out to be sympathetic. I could go on and on.So the reason for the extra ½ star? Once I stopped trying to understand what was going on and just accepted all the consistencies and dislikable protagonists the story moved quickly. And there was a bit of cleverness in the end that I didn’t see coming and that I think marginally added value to the story. But even that was ruined for me. When Jordan realizes she’s been sabotaged she thinks it’s by the modiste who made her dress. Never mind that the dress was a gift from her friend who chose to go to a different modiste then the ones society ladies usually frequent and oh the fact that her friend urged her to wear the dress on the day she was declared to be a witch……yeah it must be the modiste!I cannot recommend this book. It is poorly written and it lacks the polish of a good editor. There were some good ideas but they were not well executed and, sadly, this story just did not live up to its potential. less
