review 1: A Free-Friday book . . . In a future time, there is a shortage of girls. Each girl is appraised and a value is attached. Men check the registry to pick a wife. Mia has been give one of the highest appraisals. She looks forward to life with a future husband -- until her sister comes home. She tells Mia that her husband beats her. A short time later, Mia's sister is dead, killed by her husband as punishment.
review 2: This is the first in a series of books. The first detail I noted was how many chapters were in the table of contents. Most of the chapters are extremely short, perhaps only a few pages long, and the story clips along at a quick pace. There were some points in the story where minors details or logic didn't add up as well as I would prefer, but
... moreoverall it was a good novel. The world/political setting of the novel is very interesting and I enjoyed trying to figure out the truth of how the registry was started based on the ambiguous and conflicted reports from various characters. There was an exerpt from the second novel in the series, The Collection, which has a promising beginning and might be worth a read itself. less
