review 1: Pride and Prejudice fan fiction is my guilty pleasure. I have read enough of it now to have a good feeling for what works and what doesn't. This particular book doesn't work. There is no plot. It is all about how much Darcy (and no, calling him William does not work) and Elizabeth love each other. And have sex on every other page. There are no personalities. There are no other characters of consequence. I love character driven novels but this book reads more like soft porn. Oh and I thought "the season" in town was winter and early spring. So why two stars? Because in the author's desire to get the Darcys naked, she had no time for the Wickham subplot that these books always have (that role is given to a creepy neighbor). And Jane is also not around which seems more reali... morestic to the book and the time period.
review 2: As an ardent Jane Austen fan I couldn't finish this book. It's obvious that the author based it on a film, rather than Pride and Prejudice because it references dialogue not penned by Ms. Austen. I found the characterization of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett's marriage ill founded and while I was pleased that Ms. Lathan chose not to make Ms. Austen's characters as worldly as some others who have attempted sequels, I still found the book better suited to fans of romance novels than classics. less
