review 1: This book had nice, positive growth as it progressed which is always good to see in something that aspires to become a series. A third of the way into it I thought it was going to be just ok but then it turned a corner and became a decent little mystery. Though the character of Oona Crate starts out rather flat she becomes much more fleshed out as the pages turn. I started out being indifferent to both Oona and her past but by the end I liked her and started wondered if there was more to the family tragedy that haunts her than meets the eye. Guess that means I'm going to be reading the second book.I completely missed the fact that this book was read by its author when I bought it from Audible This can be a double edged sword. Sure an author gives a book the voice you... more hear in your head when reading the printed page but, not all authors can carry that over to giving a book a read-out-loud voice that keeps people interested. I lucked out, Shawn Thomas Odyssey has a theater background and was a delightful reader so my inattentiveness worked out for me this time.All-in-all if you like mystical, magical, fairy, wizard, weird character books you should enjoy this.
review 2: Give me Oona Crate any day! I absolutely loved this book! It was a fantastic ride through a magical (or magic-less) world with twists, turns, and sudden drops.Oona Crate possesses Natural Magic, but doesn't want it. She wants to be a detective like her father was. She needs to help her uncle, the Wizard, find a replacement for her as Wizard's apprentice then. But, just as she's about to sign away her apprenticeship, someone uses a magical dagger on the Wizard and what happens next is a mystery which Oona will have to unravel to save the Wizard, Pendulum House, and all of Dark Street! The world of Dark Street is beautifully constructed. The mystery is age appropriate (but also enjoyable for adults) and is a wonderful roller coaster ride that will keep you guessing until the very end.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read more about Oona Crate!! less
