review 1: Oh My! There are two reasons that I take my time with a book-either it is a long slog and I try to engage in it OR as in the case of Sheila Connolly's Buried in A Bog, I am smitten from the very start - and lucky for me that there is another 1- 2 punch with two follow up books waiting to be ordered and read(2014 Scandal in Skibbereen ), and the Feb 2015 entry ). My love affair with many things Irish started a ong long time ago, but got solidified in 1996 when I spent 3 weeks walking the earth of Western Ireland. Reading and indulging in books like this one is a relatively inexpensive way of visiting new places but feeling at home all at once. The complexities of family relationships and experiencing the Celtic Tiger when I first went to Ireland added to the richness and en... morejoyment of a young woman, the protagonist Maura Donovan as she takes on the brave journey of self discovery of her ancestors lives and the paths that led some of them to divergent shores. In this book Maura's discoveries start innocently enough with the discovery of a body that has revealed itself at an intersection between Maura's past, present and future. This story and the history associated with the paths it brings together are become a bit of a modest Cinderella/Dorothy adventure that while one can guess at where it takes you, the journey is worth the taking to the point of reveal and reward.I enjoyed this adventure very much and I look forward to the next two additions to this charming series.
review 2: I was originally planning on giving this book 2 stars because it took me a really, REALLY long time to warm up to the narrator (Maura Donovan). She just came off as somewhat rude and short with people, and after awhile it started to grate on my nerves. The last 50-70 pages or so really saved this book for me. Not a whole lot happened throughout the first part of the novel (Maura was becoming acclimated to life in small-town Ireland, getting to know some of the people, etc.), and most of the "action" occurred in the last 75 pages or so. Despite all that, I absolutely LOVED the characters and the setting. I think Sheila Connolly created a small town that I want to spend time in and some characters that I'd really love to get to know. I ordered the second installment in this series from my library because I really want to see what happens to the town now that Maura has decided to stay. We'll see...maybe her attitude has improved a bit :) less
