review 1: This is my all time favorite book, when reading prayers and lies I found myself laughing one page and crying the next. My life was changed after reading this novel and I recommend it for everyone. It has great themes such as forgiveness and being true to ones self and family. The writing style has a way of capturing your heart and opening your eyes to an entire new world you never knew existed. AMAZING read!!
review 2: Spoiler Alert in this review. "Prayers and Lies" is the story of Bethany Wylie, a kind and empathetic young girl who travels to West Virginia every summer to hang out with her wrong side of the track relatives, most importantly Reana Mae. Emmons describes Appalachia quite well from my perspective, as my husband's family is from West Virginia.
... moreI have traveled through some of the desperately poor areas Emmons vividly brings to life. While this story is ultimately about the power of family to lift you up, it also illustrates the profound legacy and ripple effect of alcoholism, child neglect, and sexual abuse. I found this book very hard to put down. I was anxious to find out just what the lies were hinted at in the title. I would have given the book five stars-the characters are that clear, the writing so strong-but the end of the book wrapped up a little too quickly for me and didn't ring true. All in all, a wonderful book and I will be looking for more from this author. less
