review 1: This was the first Sherry Thomas novel I had read and, after reading lots of Regency romances, I was starting to get a bit jaded by the standard plots of incorrigible rake meets fascinating innocent. This was refreshingly different. I was almost disappointed when Lord Vere finally dropped his idiot persona as it had provided so many moments of humour, intrigue and conflict. The author's writing and dialogue is captivating and very entertaining. I especially liked the scene after the wedding when Elissande is drunk and strangely fascinated by her handsome idiot of a husband - Ms Thomas very cleverly keeps us amused, frustrated and enthralled at the same time.Like another reviewer, my only "disappointment" was the relatively mild reaction of Lord Vere when Elissande was atta... morecked by her uncle. I also was not overly captivated by the aspect of the plot that related to her uncle and his crimes. However, I know I really enjoyed this book as I read it twice in a short space of time!I also very much enjoyed some of her other books, "Delicious" and "Private Arrangements". I do like the way she seems to always include an interesting romance between lesser characters as well. If you are looking for an above average historical romance with flair, you can't go wrong.
review 2: This book is extremely gothic: things happening at night are different from those occurring in plain day, characters are not all what they seem and play roles, the heroine and her aunt are imprisoned - the aunt is a drug-addict, though it never appears clearly whether she became such of her own free will to escape the misery of her marriage or with help from her abusive husband, secrets will be unraveled that are decades old.It takes a very good writer and a very good plot to make a gothic story convincing and compelling. The few I read over the past few years always seemed more like farce and lacked credibility.Sherry Thomas did a great job there, because the book is extremely difficult to put back on the table, almost from the first chapter onwards. The characters seem real enough and it's quite easy to hurt with them as the story unravels. The discovery of secrets is well managed and progressed all through the book - some can be guessed early on, some not so much. Even though the story takes place over only a matter of days, the love story is very convincing and there's no doubt that Ellissande and Penny are soul-mates perfectly made for each other.Last thing, I really loved the way their understanding and affection of each other was shown and the regular incerpt of the travelogue regarding Capri. One of the best book I read this year, it sure felt like there was nothing that could have been taken out or nothing that should have been add to make it better.I highly recommend it. less
