review 1: It was an interesting read. I liked many elements of the book. Instead of focusing on courtship or an arranged marriage, this historical romance is about a marriage that has fallen apart. The author very slowly reveals the true reason for the separation, which I did not guess correctly. I appreciated the uniqueness of the heroine. She is a strong intelligent female character, but she is not strident. She is reserved and an introvert. However, this book also suffered from many problems. First of all, I never really understood why the hero was drawn to the main character. I liked her, but his attraction to her seemed unlikely. I also disliked the use of India as a backdrop. Initially, I was pleased that the book was not set in London, but in India. However, none of... more the Indian characters are ever fleshed out. It is a very British take on India. All the Indians are servants or threatening revolutionaries. It was a waste of a fascinating setting. Lastly, the hero repeatedly has sex with the heroine, when she is sleeping. I found that to be creepy.
review 2: I enjoyed reading of a different setting for a historical romance (even though at times it went a bit too long in the scenery descriptions), no ballrooms in this book, and I enjoyed that this was a second chance at love story. But I could not for the life of me figure out what brought these two characters together. Very little chemistry. I couldn't see these people liking each other, let alone in love. less
