review 1: I like this author’s writing style. Perfect, for the Victorian setting. See how there are both male and female Spies in the service of the crown before the turn of the 20th century? I like that too.In her books, that I’ve read, neither does Ms. Thomas seem to have an inclination to fashion the male leads as the clichéd alpha rakes you find in most historical romance titles, nor the women to being gothic heroines. So I liked both characters, also for not always being dimwitted and in throes of passion that is so typical with HR. Having said that, I would like to point out that I don’t buy for a moment, that any person could just go on masking as an idiot, day after day. That would just drive them crazy. There wouldn’t be any consistency and it would show. I can sur... moreely believe in a Batman/Bruce Wayne like double life, but idiocy would surely be tiring. Love both the MCs. Vere and Ellisande are a little different from the norn, like i mentioned earlier. I resented Freddie (while he is still unaware of his brother’s act) for not accepting the person Vere had become after the accident. He does his best, but still hopes to see his brother in smarter days. Though that is basic human tendency, I do not like that he feels as though his brother is dead. And I feel that the secondary romance is unnecessary. Yep, so anyways this is a nice read.
review 2: I am actually really torn over this book. On one hand I loved the story on the other I couldn't stand the hero for most if the book. For someone who lies for a living he was really unforgiving and not understanding. I will however give this book four stars because I did enjoy it. Even if the hero really needed another bonk on the head!!! I also agree that the secondary romance was really unnecessary. It didn't add anything to the story but rather it seemed to take away from it. less
