review 1: I loved the characters! I like that they had brains. They were written so well that even if Felix was an asshole, I sympathized with him. In fact, his manipulative nature is actually charming. I liked Louisa for her brains. She was able to discern Felix's true nature and was wary of it. Of course, this is what drew Felix to her. What appeared to be her demise was actually his because it was then that he began to change and grow. The story revolves around Louisa and Felix. Louisa came to London for a late debut. She had been preparing for eight years with the sole intent to snare a husband wealthy enough to support her family. It is then that she meets Felix, who she immediately felt infatuation for. The rose coloured glasses did not last long though as she immediately saw ... morethrough his pleasant facade. From then on, she strived to steer clear of his way while he made every effort to get on hers. He manipulated matters so that he could arrange for her to be his mistress. He warned her against her suitors and blackened their reputation so that the only recourse she had was to him. She played his games though and he got lost in hers. He proposed marriage in order to have her. They started their married life in high spirits. However, the happier they were, the more discomfited he became. He pulled away from her thus bringing her to the ground and the reality of his personality. She was wary of him from then on and he didn't really want to close that distance in fear of making himself vulnerable. However, he was already vulnerable because he was falling for her. He rued the day he created that wedge and worked his way to close that distance without revealing the true extent of his feelings. Once he did reveal it, it was too late since his lies and manipulations were revealed, branding him untrustworthy. He tried to woo her but nothing really thawed her heart. She did not believe his proclamations of love because ultimately, his actions were self-serving. She was wary of putting her heart out in the open again. It was only when he helped his mother's former lover was she convinced that he was inherently good. What made Felix sympathetic and charming was his uniqueness. He grew up in a very difficult environment. He was amidst a marital problem. His mother was forced to give up her lover and marry an infatuated titled man. She took her revenge against his father and used him as a pawn. Despite the flawed environment, he still cared for his parents. When they died, he vowed to remake himself and learn from their example. He would use his manipulative talents inherited from his mother and never give his heart to anyone unlike his father. He was suprised that he could not resist Louisa and his journey in this book is to learn to trust and love.I really liked Louisa. She gave as good as she got. She kept her feelings to herself and remained realistic in an otherwise bizarre situation. I think she handled herself well and their relationship was really written well. I think my favourite part of this book is when Felix was holding Louisa in the picnic blanket. I really liked reading about their intimacy since it was those few moments of happiness that eluded Felix. Their banters felt so organix. Felix was the charming rogue who was utterly delighted with Louisa. Louisa reacted to his moods, happy when he is open and distant when he closed himself of. They were just perfect for each other.
review 2: Hell is surely freezing over as I'm giving this 5-star review to Sherry Thomas' book. I might just give Elizabeth Hoyt another try, lol. See, I never really jumped on Ms. Thomas' appreciation train. I tried reading two books she wrote, and was nooot impressed. This one - brilliant. The hero was truly a cad, and when he was bad he was really bad, but when he was good... he was oh-so-perfect. less
