review 1: I found myself bored and skimming over parts of this book. Mostly the sex scenes. They just were... somewhat boring. The world-building was the best part of the story. I'm still rather curious what happens next with the world. How the various powers and the Goddess and the Oracle all fit together and how the merman battle will continue. But I didn't find it very romantic and far too much time was spent doing a poor job developing relationships in the story that ended up boring me. I doubt I will read any more.
review 2: Hmm, this didn't really have much of a concrete ending, just a strongly implied "tbc" which I really dislike in books. Plus the opening really misleads you about the rest of the book. It's actually better than the first couple of chapters would
... moremake you think. However, the world-building could have been stronger-- or more like the world could have been explained better. The politics and factions and who knows what secrets about whom are rather muddled and sometimes come out of the blue. (Rider must be a mage himself, for all the secrets he knows and keeps and the way he's everywhere fixing problems before they're problems.) I do wish we would have gotten to see the two main characters fall in love more. The whole fated-to-be-together is kind of a cheat in their characterization, imo. I'll probably give the second one a shot, providing the reviews don't mention a similar non-ending, just to satisfy the completist in me, but I'm in no rush to pick it up. less
