Love only works when your heart is in the right place. Hers could be right next door…

Single mom Bridgette Dalton doesn’t have time to stop and smell the roses—not even in her own flower shop. But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t noticed Bodhi Booker. Her ruggedly handsome next-door neighbor would be the perfect candidate for a no-strings fling. Having loved and lost, Bridgette’s not ready to hand over her heart…but she could use a distraction.

Bodhi has one rule: never leave anyone behind. As a special operative, he knows that each new mission is more dangerous than the last. He’s never made a promise of forever to a woman, not even to the beautiful widow who has him tied in knots. And if there were anyone who could tempt him into putting down roots, it would be Bridgette and her adorable son.

But as his next deployment nears, they make a startling discovery. Their passion, meant only for the here and now, might already be blossoming into something more…

I really enjoyed my second visit to Sugar Lake and the town of Sweetwater. Bridgette is a great character, one who has been through a lot, grown up a lot and is smart and mature enough to always want what’s best for her son, even at a cost to herself. I loved her little boy, Louie too. Then there’s Bodhi, who is just amazing and perfect for her and Louie, and fits so easily into their lives…

And that’s what stopped me from quite loving this book as much as I might have. Because as much as I enjoyed it, loved the characters and the romance, this book is also incredibly heavy on the angst. I’m not adverse to a bit of angst in a romance, in fact it’s great when characters have to work hard for their happy ending. However, this time around, I couldn’t help feeling like there was more angst than necessary, all because of Bodhi’s inability to step back and assess his life, his career and the people who love him.

Yes, his career is a massive part of who he is and he has his reasons for doing what he does, but because his time in Sweetwater is completely separate from that, it made it hard at times to see why he was holding onto it so hard. Especially when everything else was taken into consideration. He’s so incredibly intuitive and giving in all other areas of his life, that this became quite a blind spot.

Which is a shame, because the rest of the book is sweet and romantic and hot, taking time to establish their relationship past the mutual lust and giving them real friendship foundations before anything happens. And when it does… whew! Worth waiting for. So overall, another enjoyable read – I can’t wait to see where this series heads next.
