review 1: In reading this book I have swung from rapturous attention to aggravation and back so many times, it's hard to know where I finally land on this. But the lyricism and imagery of the prose is so spellbinding I can forgive this work of many sins. This is not a straightforward novel and can't be read as such. Just take it in, absorb it and see what it draws out in you. As Sjon writes, "it all gets into a tangle if one tries to classify it according to reason..." and I recommend keeping this in mind as you read. And you should read it.
review 2: I am around 90% certain that the main character is not a bird, at least in part. Some reviews say this book is dreamlike, and I agree. It's dreamlike in that it doesn't make any sense. The metaphors are so tightly interming
... moreled with the reality, that it is difficult to understand what is happening. Most of the events take place "off screen," and we are left to hear about the consequences through run-on sentence ramblings that last for pages. It's not as if I didn't have an open mind or didn't try to understand. I thought I would really like this book, having a fondness for Iceland, whales, and unique literature. Instead, I found it really difficult to get through and didn't find it rewarding in the slightest. From the mouth of the whale, indeed. less

From the Mouth of the Whale is engaging, heartbreaking, and a wonderfully written magical read.

One word: bizarre. Don't think everyone will like it. Takes some getting used to.

First of all, I think it was 230 pages and not 240...
