review 2: This is a horrible book. Horrible because it deals so well with the tradgedy. It was a book I wanted to read to find answers to why and how somone could end up carrying out these acts. At the beginning I cried when reading it, but as the book progressed sadness was substituted with anger. Anger because nothing, NOTHING is even remotely a good enough explanation to what happened and how Breivik became the hateful twisted man he is. There are no answers to how a man can shoot a child straight in the face repeatedly. The book is written from the point of view of both some of the victims as well as the murderer. Some of the other reviews here point out that there is no way Seierstad can know how they tought and felt, which is true. One cant take this book for pure fact. However, I think a book like this is needed as it puts human faces to the tradgedy. The first time I saw him arrive at court my body wanted to vomit. Breivik's acts make it too easy to simply dismiss him as a monster, but in the end he is a human too whether we like the thought or not. This book makes a good effort in trying to paint up the story of who he was and is, yet nothing makes sense. I appreciate the personal stories of the victims too, from their birth until that faithful day. You find yourself pleading throught he book that the inevitable ending you know is coming won't happen. The meaninglessness of it all hits in. Upon finishing the book I understand less, and feel so much more. The title of the book could not have been any better. In a world where we increasingly divide people into "us" and "them", and how most of us believed at first that islamist had set off the bomb, it is worthwhile reflecting over the enemy within and our own naivity and self-image. I wonder if Breivik will ever understand the severity of what he has done. less
