review 1: I loved this book! It's a true story about a young boy (I think he's 12/13) that travels across the country on a Greyhound bus to his grandparent's house. He's traveling alone and the story details the people he meets along the way, the situations he encounters - some funny, some tragic. He befriends another passenger and the development of their friendship is heart warming as are the stories of all of the travelers he meets along the way. A great read, I didn't want the journey to end!
review 2: Right away we meet Sebastian Raines, an almost 12 year old boy abandoned by his mother at a Greyhound station in California. And so begins a heartwarming road trip across America with a sweet young boy entirely dependent on the kindness of strangers. I loved the premis
... moree, the 1980's setting, and the array of strangers we meet throughout the first half of the book. I enjoyed the interracial, intergenerational friendship between Sebastian and Marcus (a kind-hearted convict at the back of the bus). And so my expectations grew. I wanted to much to LOVE this story. But in the end, I only ever liked it. Author, Steffan Piper, never fully delivers on the modern-day Huckleberry Finn potential of this tale. The story is at its best when the author shares vignettes with varying strangers. But one by one, the strangers disembark, and the story transitions to an analysis of an unloved boy facing manhood. This is where the author lost me. In a typical novice writer's flaw, Piper over-told the story, as though he did not trust his reader to get it - Sebastian has a terrible mother. Sebastian stutters. Sebastian needs to become a man.Greyhound is almost perfect. But the distance between perfect and almost perfect is equal to a bus trip that ends in Albuquerque, and one that ends in Altuna. less
