review 1: I like dark. It can be fun and a good dark character can be a useful literary tool for all manner of personal development and comments on society. However, the difficulty with going dark is making at least something about the character redeemable. I'm not sure there's nothing potential with Eric Carter here, but it comes pretty close. Add in constant deaths of supporting characters and a twist at the end that leaves a sour taste, well the result is no lack of entertainment but difficult to find a desire to read more. Still, Carter is certainly interesting, the world is quite well built and there's a great journey ahead if done right.
review 2: Urban fantasy takes a walk on the dark side with necromancer Eric Carter. There are some really dirty jobs in life, bu
... moret someone has to do them. Unfortunately, Eric is one of the few who can make dead things deader...and it is a thankless job. What was interesting to me is how judgmental everyone can be towards him. His friends are that way out of love and concern for him, but they are also trying to hold on to their concepts of normalcy and safety. Eric has no such luxuries, though he berates himself as much as anyone. The action is nonstop, and sometimes even funny -- though not in the funny odd, or funny ha-ha way. More in the just when you thought it couldn't get worse way. There is a lot that Eric doesn't know about himself yet. The result is that it's impossible for the reader to anticipate what action can happen, and there is a minute loss of suspense there. However, the unrelenting tension more than makes up for it. I know that I definitely became fully invested in his character and can only wonder (with fingers crossed) that some small kindness will happen to him in the next book. less

Fun series. Just wish I had read it in the correct order. Probably would have enjoyed it even more.
