review 1: I've been reading Stephen Hunter for many years now, and he is one of my very favorite authors. That being said, this book not one of his best. Still a great read, but not as good as some of the other Swagger books. Very different type of story, with a very different Bob Lee Swagger. I understand the guy's in his sixties now, but I miss the brutal, violent, ultra-tough Bob Lee from previous books. Still had a great line towards the end of the book, when Bob says, "My name is Bob the Nailer. I kill people". Now that's the type of uber-tough guy stuff that keeps Hunter at the top of my reading list!!The new character, Ray Cruz was ok, with the big revelation about his relationship to the Swagger family coming off as truly surprising, but kind of unnecessary. Ray Cruz is ok, ... morebut Bob and Earl kick ass!
review 2: I started reading this at the cottage over the weekend, and it left me wondering why I've not read all of the Stephen Hunter books, especially since The Master Sniper was an all-time favorite. Clearly Hunter has lost none of his edge without me, as this book is as taut and gripping as almost any of his I've read. A great plot (containing one real bombshell) and good characters make this a fun read. I could do without all of the detail on guns, missiles and ammunition, but that kind of comes with the territory in this type of book! less
