review 1: This is another Bob Lee Swagger book. He is older now. The episode takes place in Tennessee where his daughter Nikki is almost killed in a car accident. Turns out someone is trying to kill her. The activity unfolds with a bunch of wild and cray hayseed family called the Grumleys trying to pull off a masterful heist at a NASCAR event. The description of events are vivid, and you will find yourself laughing at the description of these hayseeds operating a captured armored vehicle loaded with $3 million. The brains behind this couldn't be any member of this family and Bob Lee had to find who it was. This is an entertaining story, I enjoyed it.
review 2: I’m impressed with Stephen Hunter. He has taken his main character, Bobby Lee Swagger, from detailed
... more sniper sagas into new environments. From swords in his last novel and now to NASCAR. He also clarifies - for me anyway - the prior novel. (It’s as if Hunter thought the prior premise was suspect and addresses it. Nice touch. It lifted my regard for him.) It’s easily read as a stand-alone to a new series reader.Set in Bristol, TN, Night of Thunder reminds me a little of the hillbilly crime TV show, “Justified”. I liked it. I hope to see more of these bad guys in future books. less

This is the worst of the BLS books I've read. 3-stars is being generous and this from a Hunter fan.
