Bob Lee Swagger
review 1: Oh boy, another Bob Lee Swagger tale! Bob Lee is one of my favorite characters, even since Black Light, and I clear the calendar whenever a new Bob the Nailer story shows up. This one concerns a woman Russian sniper who disappears towards the end of WW2, and Bob Lee's efforts to find out what happened to her. Yes, yes, you have to suspend belief at a few places, but that's the fun. Stephen Hunter did a good job with this one, didn't phone it in like he sometimes does (I'm looking at you, Pale Horse Coming). So, if Bob's back, is Earl Swagger showing up soon?
review 2: Thos book earns five stars for a parallel plot that doesn't involve protagonist Bob Lee Swagger at all. Famous female assassin Ludmilla Petrova disappeared from the earth and the history books aft
... moreer being sent on a dangerous assignment during the waning days of World War II. Swagger and a Moscow-based journalist set out to find the facts of that era. The book gets off to a slow start but gradually picks up speed as three parallel plots start winding together. Some stretches of reality are offset by very convincing coverage of World War II Ukraine and some nicely drawn characters. Petrova is the real star of this book. My opinion is this is the best Bob Lee Swagger novel yet largely for that reason. less
