review 1: Great fiction with some interesting historical context. I have to admit, I was disappointed with the ending to a small extent. But, I woke up in the middle of the night and thought about it, and re-read it in the morning before work. Yesterday, I could not wait to get to the end, and that hasn't happened in a long time. Therefore, I had to rate it 5 stars. I love the history and the perspective of the author as an African American. I am going to give his other novels a shot.
review 2: Stephen Carter's novels are long, complex and have a multitude of characters which are challenging to keep straight. Nevertheless, I continue to enjoy them. This, his third effort, is probably his best. The story spans 20 years and suggests a conspiracy of wealthy power br
... moreokers who want to "shake the throne" and place a candidate of their own choice in the White House. I was particularly fascinated by the depiction of Harlem's upper class society in its heyday. less
