review 1: I'm writing this review after my second reading of Elegy Beach.Ariel has long been one of my guilty pleasure books. I reread it with relative frequency. Each time, I allow my love for the characters to carry me past the maddening inconsistencies in Boyett's world of the Change, and the holes in the plot, and the large suspensions of disbelief it requires. Boyett tries to pull off the same magic again with some interesting thought exercises and some pretty good 'what ifs'. The book is decent but not great. To me the crux of it is that I simply love the characters less this time around, and the inconsistencies in the world's rules are even more maddening and inconsistent than they were last time around. He simply doesn't pull you in as well this time. Then, to top it off... more, I'd swear that Boyett's infatuated with Cormac McCarthy's writing style and is trying to emulate it.The incomplete sentences. The sentence structure being off. Odd. The thoughts as statements. Can you determine that some statements are questions. Even with trailing periods. Sometimes?McCarthy can pull this off, and in his masterpieces it actually works. The problem with Elegy Beach is that Boyett is nowhere near the author that McCarthy is, and these conceits that work for McCarthy serve as little more than annoyances when applied (inconsistently) by Boyett to his work. They get in the way. Interfere. Block enjoyment. Etcetera. The book is decent. The writing is decent. I just don't love this one, whereas I really still _do_ love its predecessor, warts and all...
review 2: Love, Love, Love this book! As a companion book to Ariel, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was hoping that I would see the main characters from Ariel in here. (Let’s just say that it turned out I was pleased but sad at the same time.)SPOILERS:If you read any further you may read some things that give away the plot so, stop reading! The world is in chaos. Technology doesn’t work. Magic is REAL. Unicorns exist and as it turns out they can be what changes the world forever. By using the unicorns horn, the world can be turned back around. No magic would exist. Technology would work. Which would be the better world? As you travel the journey you will see why each can be good and each can be bad. Will they prevail in saving the Earth from the one person trying to destroy it? This is one of my favorite books. Boyett is a great writer with a wonderful imagination! I am trying not to give too much away so I sound very vague. Just read it! Then you will know what I am talking about. less
