review 1: Gordianus has returned from Egypt, and Bethesda has been cured of her illness in the sacred Nile. Pompey has been defeated and Cleopatra is Queen of Egypt, thanks to help from Caesar and his legions. Caesar has returned to Rome and no one knows whether he plans to be a dictator, like Sulla or whether he plans to become a King after seeing how convenient it is to be so close to the gods as Cleopatra can claim to be. Rome buzzes with intrigue because the Senate and Consuls will not let go of their power so easily. Calpurnia, Caesar's wife is troubled by dreams of danger for her husband and hires Gordianus to investigate whether there may be a plot to assassinate him. This is the first time Gordianus is investigating the future rather than crimes in the past. The plot revolve... mores the four triumphs Caesar has planned to glorify his military victories. Of all the novels in the series, this one feels the most belabored. Many readers have commented it is "tired" in tone perhaps because Gordianus is getting old. The triumphal displays are the way that Gordianus sees the various political powers in Rome reveal their allegiances and intents. Mark Antony and Octavius, who will become Augustus both come on stage. And Caesar's most lasting legacy becomes a reality. It is the Calendar he invents while he was with Cleopatra in Egypt. By the end of the novel, Caesar has escaped portents and dangers but the story isn't over yet.
review 2: well, this one just felt tired. maybe Gordianus needs an afternoon nap - since he is getting old. After all the other books, this one would be the bottom of the Saylors' barrel. It seemed that histoty got in the way of a good story. And that magical realism bit, well, that came out of left field. the last book was a bit mystical, too. the book needed a spark, but the a mystical element didn't really work. Better luck next time, Saylor. less

I do not know if this is one of Saylor's best, but I love Gordianus and I can't get enough of him

I thought the series lagged in the middle, but Saylor is back in top form for this one.
