review 1: Good. A fun collection of short stories that are well brought together with a preface and then a particularly good final chapter which gives the whole whole book a bigger sense of narrative. The individual short stories are otherwise completely standalone, and based around a visit to each of the wonders of the world (plus the 8th, the lighthouse and the ruins of Corinth). As you'd expect, the description of the wonders is a fair piece of each story, and is vivid with Gordianus's sense of excitement palpable. But then the event (a murder or otherwise) is often a particularly short part of it - a good collection of short stories, with some fun foreshadowing of the the rest of the series.
review 2: For a collection of short stories, this is a great collection.... more This is a preqel following the eighteen year old Gordianus, the Finder, who would later star in a book series "Roma Sub Rosa". Antipater of Sidon, a real historical figure, takes young Gordianus on a tour to see the Seven Wonders (of the Ancient World). I thoroughly enjoyed the magical descriptions of the Seven Wonders of which only one of them exists in our time (the Pyramids).At each Wonder (and a couple interludes), Gordianus gets involved in mystery which he solves.Still I found the stories on the simplistic side. With the mysteries just short stories, the true culprit was difficult to hide. The writing on the simplistic side. It felt more like a young adult book (which I would have loved when I was in junior high). less
