review 1: This is one of those books where "nothing" happens. You are following an elderly woman, Emily, through approximately a year of her life. You hear about her garden, her beloved dog Rufus, her best friend and sister in law Arlene, her Christmas cards. Etc. The most monumental thing is still minor on the scale of mysteries or explosions or magic. And yet, it's captivating. A transporting look at what it means to grow older, to make your peace with death and still be waiting. To look back on your life, your relationships, and have insights that others will only learn in their own turn. To be left behind by the busy lives of your children and grandchildren. To be the recipient of perfunctory once or twice yearly visits. It's not a guilt trip, but it IS an empathetic window into t... morehe future, and I've been writing my Grandmother more often because of it. This is one that will stick with me.
review 2: I enjoyed this tremendously. Not for those looking for action or an intricate plot. Not much really happens, as we follow the day to day life of a widow in her late 70s. Her children and grandchildren live far away (Emily herself lives in Pittsburgh), old friends have died, and her only real companions are her elderly sister-in-law and her aging dog. I found Emily's life and thoughts extremely interesting, but this may not appeal to younger readers. less
