review 1: While I did not enjoy "Wish You Were Here', the predecessor novel to this one, I thoroughly enjoyed "Emily, Alone". It was half the length of "Wish you Were Here" and vastly more engaging. Moreover you do not need to read the earlier novel in order to understand and enjoy this one. "Emily, Alone" gave me a keen awareness of the questions that face an elderly woman living alone and an even keener respect for one with a character such as Emily possesses.
review 2: An accurate portrayal of a year in the life of an elderly widow, but really way too much detail about just how mundane life is. Every time you think that something is really going to happen, it turns out to be nothing. Most of my elderly friends lead lives a bit richer than Emily has chosen for her
... moreself. However, I am sure that this is pretty accurate for many people, and could well have described much of my own step-mother's late years. For that reason, I felt it worth finishing. less

Likable and sad. All about the simple things. Makes me want to visit my grandma. Loved Emily.
