review 1: I enjoyed the last part of the book, but found the first couple hundred pages a bit of a slog. Both narrators are suffering but are unable to change their circumstances to any great degree, so the plot is a bit slow. I also grew a bit frustrated with the alternating narrators -- switching back and forth broke up the narrative flow. Nonetheless, this was a tremendous history lesson and a great opportunity to learn more about the Grimké sisters. And the end was certainly inspiring.
