review 1: In volume 1 of Tokyo Ghoul volume one (mostly summarizing chapter one because I am so far ahead) the story is very complex. The beginning of this book gives you the idea that humans are at the top of the food chain, but you soon realize that it is kind of like a rhetorical statement as in they ask themselves a question and then proving themselves wrong, basically stating that there are super human creatures called ghouls. You are greeted with the protagonist of this story Kaneki ken a VERY generic in-competent Japanese teenager that is scared of everything and really likes a specific series of books. Before I move on I must say that I see the generic weakling main character because it gives the audience someone to root for. It would be really hard not to spoil this book in... more a review because there is a really predictable plot twist at the end of the first chapter, pretty much Kaneki becomes a ghoul and you follow in the second chapter how Kaneki copes with changing to a ghoul. You follow him as he recovers and he finds an underground ghoul gathering spot disguised as a neighborhood coffee shop, and makes new friends that have a decent amount of back story that you can actually care for them, with the alternative being lazy writers giving the supporting characters no back story that you dont care when they die because you barley know them. Going into each character would take too much time, besides Kaneki's friend Hideyoshi which is by far the most boring character being the generic childhood friend story, and how their best buds... Writing more I would probably accidentally surpass chapter one in my review. To summarize what i think about volume one is that its "pretty good" there isn't much I couldn't predict, and there are plenty of plot-holes for example ghouls can only eat humans, and cant eat anything else and I really mean they can not eat anything besides human flesh with for some reason the only acception being coffee... For some reason coffee is the only thing that these super human, human eaters can drink. Its plot holes like these that make the story kind of start to get corny, except overall i would highly recommend this book, because regardless of the plot holes, and very bland supporting characters with some acceptions. This book still remains very interesting book that i would recommend to anyone with a darker taste in Manga.
review 2: I was first introduced to this as the anime which started being released in July this year. Of course I didn't realise it was originally a manga as I couldn't find it. Then I found why. It was under the Japanese name. lol. "Toukyou Kushu."So yeah, I started reading this a few weeks ago and have not been able to put it down since. I found it interesting to see a story that shows the more human side of Ghouls. But man, talk about brutal and horrific in some scenes. My stomach was clenching, even felt somewhat sick at some of the scenes. Of course this just made me enjoy it all that much more. I love when they don't hold back on violence, makes it more realistic. It was awesome to watch the main character Kaneki change slowly over the chapters. As each horrific scene unfolds he gets stronger and more kickass, but still manages to slip back to his vulnerable original character too. You have to pay full attention reading this one, heaps of characters to remember and connect to different situations, and can get quite political with the CCG hunting down the ghouls at every turn.Unfortunately it has ended now, and man, the Mangaka left quite a few loose threads. Am really hoping he starts a new series soon. less
