review 1: In most renderings of english history, Margaret of Anjou is firmly cast in the villain's role, as are most figures on the Lancastrian side in the Wars of the Roses. She is a bloodthirsty, vengeful foreigner and her husband, Henry VI, a weak, mad usurper. In this novel, 'The Queen of Last Hopes', Susan Higginbotham has set out to change some of those perceptions and to a large degree she has succeeded in doing so. I certainly came away from this book thinking about Margaret, Henry VI and the Lancastrians in a different light. The only drawback for me was that there was actually a little too much historical information in this book, which sounds a strange thing to say, but at times it detracted from the characters and the storytelling and perhaps affected the pace of the nov... moreel, especially as several different viewpoints are employed in telling the tale. Other than that, I enjoyed 'The Queen of Last Hopes'a a great deal.
review 2: A good view of Margaret of Anjou's life. In most of the historical fiction about the Wars of the Roses that I have read, the Yorkist side of the conflict is typically the focus and the early years are skipped. Hence, this biographical novel of Margaret of Anjou's is refreshing. Margaret comes across as a likable character whose story might have been different had circumstances allowed. A good read for anyone interested in this period of history. less

It's funny that even when you know how it is going to end, you keep hoping it will be different.
