review 1: Debut novel from Susan Nussbaum. An fictional look at life inside a state run institution for disabled teens, from their perspectives. All the characters have unique challenges, and the staff that are employed there have varying degrees of empathy and compassion. As the conditions worsen, the teens and staff struggle to maintain their dignity and ethics. Some raunchy bits, but well developed story, unique plot and characters you can relate to.

The author is a master of honestly capturing a variety of characters’ voices from Yessenia Lopez the 16 year old teenager whose options are supervised care or juvie, to Mic... morehelle Volkmann the 20-something recruiter for the Chicagoland nursing facilities owned by the Whitney-Palm Group who is in over her head, to the charming and loveable 22 year old suit wearing Teddy Dobbs who is soon to be released from state care and his love for fellow care inmate, the heartbreakingly simple, Mia Oviedo his “hot Mexican mama.” Each character’s voice is utterly realistic. Nussbaum exposes the injustices of long term-care for disabled people without sentimentality, while she shows readers that people who live in these places are simply human beings with the same foibles and phobias as anyone else. less
