review 1: A very odd but endearing book that was not all at what I thought it would be about based on the summary on the back. The story weaves together three different people looking for love, but the balance between their stories is not even. The main character seems to be Bobby, a young gay man from the South who has moved to NYC during the 1980s seeking acceptance. Reading about him living through the AID's epidemic was really interesting and something I hadn't read about before. There is also the story of Alice Stone a retired African-American cook with an interesting history, and Amelia a newly divorced lady. The story starts being about Alice, but she is largely forgotten for most of the book, and I really wanted to hear more about her. Amelia plays an important part at the e... morend, but she isn't particularly unique in terms of characters. I wish the whole book would have been about Bobby. The other characters were not developed enough, though it seems a whole book could have been written about Alice. I thought it was going to be more focused on food bringing people together, but that wasn't really true. Either way, Bobby was a fantastic character who really tugged at my heart.
review 2: 3.5 stars. Mixed feels about the book. I listened to this story and loved the narration from each character - probably why I finished it so quickly. I very much enjoyed each person's unique story but that's the problem, it felt like three individual short stories (probably because each story is told in first person with no link to the other stories). It was only at the very end that they all tied together and I just kept thinking "what are the odds that these people would come together like this". It's like meeting people at different events and then later realizing they all had this crazy bond. The stories were so disjointed that I just didn't believe it. less

beginning was good - I wanted more of it. Middle dragged on and on. Ending was OK.
