review 1: I gobbled this up just as I did Schoenberger's latest novel, The Virtues of Oxygen. Her writing challenges my intellect and warms my heart. With A Watershed Year, there were several key relationships the main character, Lucy, was involved in, but the one that was so emotionally wrenching and vivid was the one with her newly adopted four year old son from Russia. From the first moment when she decided to go this route, I was unable to stop reading. Then she goes to Russia to get him and I'm screaming, No, something bad is going to happen! I couldn't believe the strength and resilience and bravery of Lucy to do this. Go off to Russia by herself to hopefully bring back a son, after all the paperwork, and the bribes and the traveling with a little boy who clearly has problems,... more only speaking Russian just one of them. The book is worth a read just for this key story. There were other sub-stories, with a friend who had died and another friend who wanted to date her, but I found myself skimming over those sections just to get to more of Lucy and Mat. Still, it all added to the richness of the narrative and the character of Lucy.I anxiously await another book by Susan Schoenberger. I'll read whatever she writes. Her mastery of language is brilliant.
review 2: This story is touching and real. The characters are compelling, particularly the main character Lucy. It was hard to put the book down. As an adoptive mom and professor , many elements of the story rang true for me. A couple times I had to laugh at the inaccurate portrayal of professor's jobs though, and also Lucy's cluelessness about adopting an older child bordered on silly, thus the four stars. Still this book is a new favorite. less

I had a hard time staying engaged with this book. A good story but it moved too slowly for me.

OK, but I was drawn to keep reading, only finished because it was there!
