review 1: This is a beautiful story about Lucy who is losing her best friend to cancer. The remainder of the book holds flashbacks which describes and defines their relationship. At the same time, she attempts adoption of a Russian boy and all of the obstacles she faces with that in and out of Russia. There are other sideline stories but the previous two themes are always woven throughout the book. It is very well written, touching, and difficult to put down.
review 2: I am the minority here. At least in the people that gives reviews here on goodreads. I did not feel any real connection between her and her friend that recently died. I thought I was going to enjoy his monthly emails sent to her after he died. I especially did not get her new relationship and though both
... moreare in their 30's she is stuck on she is 6 years older. Well it just appeared to me he was the more mature one. The adoption thing was ok but it just didn't connect well that she would not include her professionals. People in her life on this big step since it was such a distraction to her work. I saw bits and pieces why others like this book but it did not flow right and they characters fir not connect in a real way to me. But I finished the book when I almost gave up. less

A Watershed Year was a recommended book here by a friends on Goodreads. I really enjoyed this wonderful story of a thirty-something professor named Lucy and the story starts off with the loss of her best friend Harlan. This is a book that takes you through the healing process but in that transition time, Lucy adopts a four year old boy from Russia becoming another journey in itself…..This is a touching story, a life changing one for Lucy, but also helps you look at what you can do in your own story…..A really nice read…..

This is one of those books I loved from beginning to ending. I honestly liked all the characters. I cared deeply about their lives, drawn along as I watched events unfold. It was hard reminding myself I was not following real people through real life situations. This author knows how to grab the heartstrings while cutting deep through the emotions and struggles of both everyday life and watershed moments.

Not a bad storyline. Felt it was a bit awkwardly written in parts.
