review 1: Two women trapped by two very different circumstances become friends and help change each other's lives. There are several flaws in the story, but if you're willing to overlook them this is an interesting book. Holly comes across as a whiny, woe is me, my life is hard woman who does nothing to better her circumstances. Her brother and sister also falling on hard times at precisely the moment their mother has a stroke is too convenient, as is the story of Mom's engagement ring. I wish Vivian had more of a story. Her chapters were the most interesting to me, telling of her life before and after polio. The 'love interest', Racine, seemed incredibly far fetched. The best looking guy to hit town in years and he falls for Holly in five minutes. That's about all we know o... moref him. Instead of riding a white steed, he drives a Jaguar, but he's still just a knight in shining armor stereotype.
review 2: The title was tempting and the blurb promising but, overall, the book was a disappointment. Sure widowed Holly had money problems, but the book rehashed them over and over. And yet again. There were some interesting characters trotted out periodically (like the two nuns), but it was almost as though the editor had suggested some interesting characters would add interest and length. The "unaired podcasts" by Vivian, the woman in the iron lung, were a bit more interesting as they retold her life story and some of her feelings. What the short novel (only 6 CDs) felt like was a short story from a woman's magazine, s t r e t c h e d into a novel. The simple, flat writing and the predictable conclusion. Not sorry to reach the end,The writing style definitely suffers next the flair of THE TEN-YEAR NAP which I am also listening to. less

A nice enough story. But nothing exciting and actually very predictable.

I thought this book was a little sad and depressing.
