review 1: This author has been a bit of a hit and miss with me with this series, and I had parked this book for quite a while, reluctant to get to it due to the previous misses. But I am glad I found my way to it, finally. The h is real, grounded, devoid of unnecessary melodrama, and completely likeable, if not the most likeable in recent memory. The H is the typical gentleman of the period - *minor spoiler* - in lust with the h but did not think she was suitable for marriage due to her (illegitimate) background.A small issue I had was that it took probably about 3/4 of the book before the H broke free of his limiting beliefs and by the time he did anything about it and went after the h, it was already in the last few chapters.Nicely written, and a recommended ... moreread.
review 2: I found this book to be quite enjoyable from the time that Sophia was thrown into the water until the very end. After Adam invited Sophia to spend the holidays at his estate, she isn’t unaware of the reasons why-she is a bastard and is used to the scandal that comes with her presence, that and the fact she works at the Tantalus Club. I could sense the attraction between them brewing and although I didn’t like that Adam wasn’t the first man she was with, he was the one she wanted to be with but couldn’t because of her illegitimacy. Adam only has until his 30th birthday to find a bride or risk losing all and despite how long this book took to tell their story I was happy that Sophia was it! It took a lot of convincing and a few obstacles-Vicar Loines and Eustace-but I was very pleased with the outcome. less
