review 1: All is not as it seemsLiving in a world where you never remember yesterday, Gwyn is perfectly ok with only the promise of a New day and forgetting yesterday. Forgetting pain, anger and hatred. Forgetting the mistakes that were made. Forgetting everything except for what she is conditioned to remember. This is how society is now in The Last City of Men. You are not supposed to remember things unless they want you to, you are not to have imaginations about anything. Every night when the city goes to sleep, aside from the select few, a reset happens and they awake to a New day, not remembering yesterday. Gwyn and her friend Amber gets an invite to The Club of Unknown, the elusive secret club that everyone whispers about But no one can remember if they have ever been there o... morer if it even exists. On the Tram to the secret location of the club Gwyn sees a boy with startling green eyes and all of a sudden she gets a memory of knowing him. It freaks her out, she should not know him. He doesn't go to her school, but she knows that she knows him somehow. Turning her attention back towards her friends Amber and Lyle, she tries to not have imaginations about the boy with the green eyes. But, he finds her at the club, and her entire world is about to change. Outside the walls of the City is rumored to have monsters that will tear you alive, but Gwyn is about to find out just who the monsters really are. She sees something horrific and as much as she wants to go to sleep so the reset will erase everything she saw, the boy with the green eyes won't let her. He needs her. He needs her to remember everything she saw. Wants her to understand things are not what they seem. Now, working as an engineer, she will get her memories, she Will remember every day. She remembers the horrific things she saw at the city walls.Her and Lyle are now paired, picked by the Superior Engineer. They are to seem like a New couple, deeply in love. They were given a house, clothes and food, whatever they need. But they can never let on that they know the truth. Can these do go on and pretend to be that couple, to pretend that they are just like everyone else and believe what they have been taught their entire lives or, will they be able to do what needs to be done to fight the real monsters? Lyle's father thinks that Lyle can save the world and that Gwyn will just hinder him, he wants her to go outside the walls to a city called The Lost City. She will finally see what horrors lie outside the walls.She goes outside the walls and is shocked at what she finds. The world is not what they were programmed to believe. Teaming up with some of the others that have been pushed outside the wall, Gywn soon discovers that she don't want to be a part of the reset anymore, she wants to have her memories and she wants to fix what they have done. When she finds out that Lyle has come outside the wall to find her, they set off on a jounery that will change their lives forever. This was a great book, kept me up well into the wee hours of the morning reading, just like all of Tara's books. I can't wait for Duplicities, coming out soon! I NEED to know what happens!!!
review 2: To be honest, I thought I was going to love it and you know, expectations are a bitch. The concept is really interesting - in this society, youngsters go to bed and forget their days, waking up with no memories of anything painful, humiliating, sad. Then this girl feels something strange in this event (Club of the Unknown) and starts to unveil the mystery of this not so perfect world.But it dragged, and got too complex, and she was just not someone I could relate to, so there you go. less
